Seasonal Changes & Tadpole's Promise

Phonics

Year 1

This week we have been recapping the “ow” sound as in “snow”. Here are the spellings this week:

box

job

bulb

own

grow

elbow

yellow

other

were

snowman

We have also been focussing on hearing and writing the final sounds in words, especially ones that have a blend - st, lb, nk.

Year 2

This week we have been learning the trigraph /ear/. Here are this week’s spellings…

grip

milk

ear

dear

year

tear

spear

earrings

zero

equals

We have also been recapping on plurals (more than one) and how when a word ends in y with a vowel before (e.g. boy) we just add an s - so boy becomes boys. However if a word ends in y and has a consonant before it we change the y to an i then add es - so puppy becomes puppies & fly becomes flies.

English - Tadpole’s Promise

In English this week we have been sequencing the main events of the story. Children will be acting out the ‘bare bones’ of the story, sequencing pictures and then working to retell the story. Next week we will be planning and writing our own story.

Maths

Year 1

This week we have been continuing to learn about tens. We are really good at counting in 10s and so we have been comparing amounts using symbols - < (is less than) > (is more than) = (is equal to).

We have also been looking at number lines and estimating where a 10s number might go on a number line. We noticed that it was similar to a 1-10 number line!

At home -

Can you choose the correct symbol?        <                 >                  or         =

Year 2

This week we have been learning how to add 2 two-digit numbers where the ones cross 10. Children have been shown how to do this pictorially and through equations and have been using the strategy they find easiest. Here is an example…

This method is drawn pictorially using tens and ones. When there are more than 9 ones in the ones column we exchange 10 ones for 1 ten.

This method partitions the tens and ones. We use our knowledge of relative facts to add the tens (4+2=6 so 40+20=60) and then combine the tens and ones back together.

Science Project - Seasonal Changes

For the next few weeks we will be enjoying a new science project called Seasonal Changes (please see the bottom of this blog for the knowledge organiser with all the key information and vocabulary on).

This week we will be recapping on the four seasons, learning about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees and talking about the changes we see in deciduous trees throughout the seasons.

Don’t forget…
