English
This week we have continued to think about space.
Year 1 went on an imaginary space adventure and thought about all the things we might see. We hid from the aliens and then found out they were friendly so we had a picnic and played games with them. The children made their own aliens out of salt dough and then wrote words to describe them. The children then planned their own space adventures and wrote a space adventure of their own.
Year 2 will be focusing on different styles of writing. They will be captioning a picture of a rocket, writing instructions using imperative verbs on how to go to space, describing an alien and writing a letter to astronaut Tim Peake.
Maths
Year 1
This week we have been learning how to use our knowledge to help us to solve problems. We tried recording our work in different ways.
We looked at this problem:
The children had to decide how they would create an addition equation.
Then they decided how to show their thoughts. Here is an example;
“I can add the spots and the stripes.”
4 + 5 = 9
Or
Or
We chose our own bunting questions and recorded them using equations, part/whole models and bar models.
Year 2
This week we have been learning how to subtract through and from 10.
The example on the left shows subtracting through 10 and the example on the right from 10. We have used tens frames & counters and bead strings to support our learning this week and our knowledge of number bonds to 10 has really helped.
Why not have a go at these equations at home? You could draw your own tens frames to help you and use the strategy you prefer.
12 - 5 = 17 - 8 =
13 - 7 = 11 - 5 =
15 - 9 = 14 - 6 =
Shade & Shelter Project
After investigating different types of shelters and finding out properties of the materials they are made from, this week the children have made their own shelter using recycled materials. They will also be working in groups to make shelters that are weatherproof and big enough to fit 4 people inside!
