Phonics
In phonics this week we are recapping the ng sound. We are listening carefully to try and make sure we can hear all the sounds in words to write them down. Here are some of the words we have learned this week for you to practise at home:
lung
strong
length
ring
singing
English
Last week we learnt about questions and question marks. (?) This week we received an exciting letter from King Henry VIII. He told us about his life and asked us some questions about school and things we liked to do. So we have been learning how to write a letter. We thought about answers to his questions and asked him some of our own. We learnt about how to set out a letter with the address at the top and to start with the greeting. Then we wrote our own letters in reply to King Henry.
Maths
In maths this week we have been finding out about British money. We have held, sorted and named 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2. We learned about the value of each coin and then went pretend shopping! Everyone had to pay with the correct money as the shopkeeper was mean and refused to give change! Some children were very keen and bought more than 1 item, so they had to add and find the total first.
The year 2 children found the cost of their items was much higher, so they had to use their knowledge of tens and ones adding from last week to help them find the totals!
Topic
This week we are investigating the properties of different materials. We learned the words; flexible, stiff, bendy, rough, smooth, hard, soft, bumpy and used them to describe a range of different materials. Then we learned about what a shield was and what it was used for. We put our knowledge from the investigation to use by selecting the material we would use to make our own shield and say why we chose it.
