  Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson

This week we have started a new text called “Cave Baby” by Julia Donaldson. The children arrived in the classroom on Monday morning to find that someone had painted pictures all over the walls! We talked about naughty things we might have done too. After hearing the story the children explored the animal characters by listening to music and moving around like that animal. Then we thought about using adjectives to describe the characters and the children matched characters to their descriptions. Finally we looked back at our sentences and found ways to improve them and make the writing much more interesting.

Maths

Year 1

This week we have been learning about 2D shapes. We have sorted and named the shapes circle, triangle, rectangle and square. We have Used these shapes to make pictures and created repeating patterns with them. Finally we have thought about the properties of each shape and used this to make our own 2D shapes.

Year 2

This week has been all about shape. We recapped on the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and refreshed our memory with the names of common 2D and 3D shapes.

Then we learnt how to count the sides of 2D shapes, identify if they are straight or curved and to count the vertices (corners, where 2 sides meet).

Next we learned about symmetry and used mirrors to explore and find things which are and aren’t symmetrical. During half term why not go out and about and identify the shapes of things. Are these symmetrical?

Geography project - Our Wonderful World

We have started a new geography project and this week we have been learning about physical and human features of the land. We sorted pictures and then used this knowledge to create physical maps. Year 2 added a key to their map using symbols. Next we used positional and directional language to talk about where things are in relation to each other. We described where things are in the classroom and then drew simple maps of the classroom.
