Astronauts & shelters
Phonics
Year 1
This week in phonics we have been focussing on the “ll” sound. We learnt that words that have a short vowel sound, “a, e, i, o, u” usually have a double letter following it.
This weeks spellings are:
red
win
drum
will
bell
doll
skull
said

windmill
Year 2
This week we have been learning the wa spelling where the a is making an /o/ sound. Here are this week’s spellings to read and write at home…
duck
click
wand
wash
swan
wasp
watch
swallow
May
June
English
This week we have continued to learn about space after reading Astro Girl by Ken Wilson-Max. We have been learning facts about space and creating fact files using headings and photographs. Our fact files will include where astronauts live, what they eat and what they wear.

Maths
Year 1
This week we have begun to think about addition. We have started slowly and only using numbers within 10. The children have counted different groups of objects and then added them together to find a total. Then we learned about the + symbol and the = symbol. The children used this knowledge to begin to write their own addition equations within 10. We are still using lots of resources and pictures to help us.
Here are some to try at home.
Can you write the equations? Take care to get your numbers the correct way around.
Year 2
This week we have continued with adding 3 addends (digits) together and looked carefully to find 2 digits that add up to ten using our knowledge of number bonds to 10. Eg 6 + 3 + 4, we know 6 + 4 = 10 so we can work out 10 + 3 = 13. We used tens frames and counters and also Numicon to help us with this.
We then used this knowledge to help us add 2 addends together using our knowledge of bonds to 10. For example-
7 + 5 =
We know 7 + 3 = 10 so we can partition (split up) the 5 into 3 and 2. Then we can add on the final 2. We used tens frames and counters to support this.
As part of your home learning you could have a go at solving these equations…(don’t forget you can use Lego or small toys as counters or draw your own tens frames to support your learning).
9 + 4 =
8 + 3 =
7 + 6 =
6 + 7 =
9 + 6 =
(Please don’t forget to always share any home learning with your teacher!)
D&T Project- Shade & Shelter
Our new project is called Shade and Shelter. This week we will be defining the difference between shade and shelter, looking at various shelters. We will be looking at the materials they are made from and thinking about their suitability.
Children will also be designing their own shelters and thinking about the best materials to use for these.
A knowledge organiser is attached to the bottom of this Blog with all the key information and vocabulary.
