Tadpole's Promise and collagraphy printing

Phonics

Year 1

This week we have been learning that the “”y” can make an “ie” sound. We have read and written words containing the “y” sounds.

This weeks spellings are:

win

sit

stop

fry

dry

crying

sky

more

before

myself

Year 2

This week we have been recapping the -ey spelling of the /ee/ sound. Here are this week’s spellings…

film

kept

key

honey

money

donkey

chimney

journey

thousand

million

We have also been using the conjunctions and, but, because, or so & while to join sentences together which makes our writing more interesting.

English - Tadpole’s promise

In our first English lesson we found a small pond in the classroom filled with promises. We had to try and work out who each promise belonged to. After recapping apostrophes for possession year 2 help to label the promises then all children wrote their own promises.

Next we talked about things that change (some are artificial such as traffic lights and others are natural like the weather). We used time words first, then, next and finally to talk about and write about these changes.

We started to read Tadpole’s Promise but Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross and year 2 sorted words with apostrophes into those for contraction and those for possession.

Then we looked at some illustrations of ponds and identified all of the things (nouns in them). We used these to create story starters such as…Where the water meets the lily pads….where the tall grass meets the sky….where the pebbles meet the water’s edge.

Maths

Year 1

This week we recapped counting in 10s as many children had missed this when they were poorly. We made towers of 10 blocks, counted numicon 10s, deines 10s, 10 pences and bundles of 10 objects. We learned how to write the tens numbers in numerals - 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and in words ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety.

Then we learned to write expressions to represent the numbers.

AT HOME

Please keep practising counting in tens forwards and backwards.

You could set up a shop and make the prices of items multiples of ten.

Or

How much would an apple and a pear cost?

How much money would I need to buy an orange, an apple and a banana?

If I had 50p what could I buy?

Year 2

This week we are focusing on addition and subtraction. We started the week by recapping adding and subtracting 10 from a 2 digit number and spotting that when we do this the ones digits always stay the same.

For example -

14 + 20 = 34 45 - 20 = 25

Next we learnt about relative facts- applying what we know. For example-

How can we easily solve 50 + 20? We know 5 + 2 = 7 therefore we know 50 + 20 = 70.

Why not have a go at these equations at home? Remember to explain what you are doing.

45 + 30 = 74 - 40 =

56 - 20 = 28 + 30 =

We have also been looking at different ways to partition 2 digit numbers. For example…

Knowing that numbers can be partitioned (split up) in different ways, and not just into tens and ones, can help us to solve addition and subtraction equations.

Art Project - Rain and Sunrays

This week we have continued with our art project after taking a break during World Book Week. This week we have recapped the weather symbols, different types of lines and textures and learned about collagraphy (a printmaking progress). The children will be using a range of textured materials to create their own collagraph in the shape of a weather symbol and will then use this to print.
