Conjunctions, diary writing & division

Big Talk

This week we would like you to talk about conjunctions. We would like you to have a go at using conjunctions (See English below for more information) to extend and expand simple sentences. These can be as silly or as serious as you like. Here are a few sentences you could start with...

I had a banana for breakfast.

We got absolutely soaked.

The boys went to the park.

She laughed.

Phonics

Phonics this week is all about learning which is the correct 'k' sound. We know c, k and ck all make the same sound, and now we need to learn the correct one to use. Here are this week's spellings...

hook

fork

back

brick

deck

flock

struck

backpack

nineteen

twenty

English

This week Mrs Foster is teaching the children how to use conjunctions in their writing. We have been using coordinating conjunctions to add two simple sentences together. These sentences make sense on their own but can be joined together using words such as and, but, so.

I like apples and I like bananas.

We went swimming, but we wanted to go to the park.

She was upset, so she didn't go out to play.

We have also been learning about subordinating conjunctions which help to add the extra information that tells us when, why or where something happens. Examples of these are if, when, after, before, because.

Children have also been learning about the features of a diary entry. Children have been thinking about different times words to use and also how to write in the first person.

Maths

This week we are learning about the inverse of multiplication- division. We will start the week be sharing practically. What's 12 shared between 4? We will then move on to doing this using pictures. Then we will have a look at division by grouping both practically and then pictorially. Here is a great video to explain the difference between grouping and sharing...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdglIPNNhuI

Mrs Ellis' Maths Challenge

Mrs Ellis has 12 cupcakes that she wants to share with Carol & Mrs Foster. How many cupcakes will they each get? Can you show your answer using both grouping and sharing?

Topic

This week we will be sketching. The children will be learning how to create different marks with pencils and about tone, how light or dark things are. They will then look at the shapes of a face and sketch one of our famous monarchs- King Henry VIII or Queen Elizabeth II.

Don't forget...

Parent teacher interviews are this week.

World Book Day is Thursday 3rd March and children are asked to wear a hat or headband.
