Descriptive writing & fractions
Big Talk
This week we would like you to describe what you can see in the picture below. Can you use similes? Can you use exciting adjectives and different words to describe the colours?
Phonics
This week is phonics we are recapping on the 'oi' phoneme. We know two graphemes that make this sound- oi and oy. We know that /oy/ usually comes at the end of words (as in joy, boy) but not always! Below are this week's spellings...
drag
trip
join
spoil
point
joy
royal
ointment
fifty
sixty
English
This week we have been reading the story George and the Dragon by Chris Wormell. Today we read the opening line of lots of different books. Next we chose our own setting and created exciting opening lines using adjectives, alliteration and repetition. We will be reading a little of the story at a time and then using adventurous adjectives, similes and interesting verbs to begin to create our own versions of the story. Next week the children will be doing an independent piece of writing where they retell their own version of the story changing different elements such as the setting and second character.
As part of your home learning you could use adjectives and similes to describe different things such as your pets or family members. For example... Mrs Ellis is as tall as a baby giraffe. Rosie Toes the cat is as fluffy as a cloud and has fur as white as snow.
Maths
We have continued our work with fractions this week focusing non-unit fractions (any fraction where the numerator, top number, is more than 1), finding 3/4 of shapes and amounts (using bar models), equivalent fractions (1/2 = 2/4) and counting in fractions.
At home, you could create your own fractions using toys such as lego. If you have 1 red brick and 2 blue bricks 1/3 is red and 2/3 are blue. What different fractions can you make?
Topic
This week the children will be making their photo frames based on their designs. The children will be using saws, glue guns and other resources to cut and stick their wood. They will then be able to display their fantastic Royal sketches they made. We will be learning how to use tools safely and encouraging the children to create their frames independently.
