Year 2 21st September 2020
Week 3
English
This week we are reading The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams. Follow the link to hear David Walliams reading the story https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/book/the-slightly-annoying-elephant/
We have been thinking about nouns (naming words), verbs (doing words) and adjectives (describing words). We have been identifying these in the story and creating our own sentences using these. We have been learning how to write elephant using our phonic sounds, how to draw elephants and making paper elephants!
Phonics
We are now doing class phonics daily and recapping all of the initial, phase 3 and phase 5 sounds before we move on to phase 6 (which consists mainly of spelling rules and patterns). We may send some words, tricky words or sounds for your child to recap at home. It would be great if you can practice these daily at home for a few minutes to support your child's learning. There are also lots of resources you can use online such as https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/dragons-den
Maths
In maths we have been focusing on number and place value. We have been using lots of physical resources such as bead strings, numicon and tens and ones. We have been identifying numbers up to 100 using a bead string, learning how to count in 10s from any number by adding on 10 each time (e.g. 2 (+10) 12 (+10) 22 (+10) 32 and so on), how to group objects into 10s to make them easier to count and thinking about the place value of 2 digit numbers.
As part of your home learning you could have a go at counting in 10s from any single digit number. You could use the interactive 100 square https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares to help, or use the number frames on mathsbot.com https://mathsbot.com/manipulatives/numberFrames.
Here is an example using the 100 square-
Reading
We are slowly getting into new routines and we appreciate your patience while we do this. We would still like you to record your reading at home in the Reading Diaries. If you do not have one or need a new one please email your class teacher and they will send one home. Please keep these in book bags and if your child is read with on a Monday in school it will be written in.
Big Talk
Have a look at the picture and talk about the questions below...
What can you see?
Where do you think she is heading?
What do you think has happened?
What does she have packed in her trunks?
Who is the tiger?
Are two legs better than four?
How do you think the elephant and tiger are feeling and why?
