Year 2 28th September 2020
Week 4
We have definitely seen a dramatic change in the weather this week which has meant we haven't been able to enjoy being outside as much as we'd like. However we will be going out as much as possible so please make sure children always have their wellies in school and a suitable coat.
English
This week in English we have continued looking at the story The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams. We have been sequencing pictures of the story, identifying nouns and creating exciting adjectives to describe them. Then everyone has had a go at rewriting the story. We are very impressed with the children's efforts! Finally this week we will be editing our work, checking for capital letters, fingers spaces, full stops and adjectives.
Maths
Maths this week has been all about addition and subtraction. We have been recapping number bonds to 10 and learning number bonds to 20. These are 2 pairs of numbers that add up to 10 or 20 (e.g. 5+5=10, 6+4=10). Knowing these quickly will support children with their mental maths skills.
We have been using numicon and bead strings this week to help us. If you want to have a go at home https://mathsbot.com/manipulatives/ has interactive resources. Can you child show you different pairs to ten using the number frames (numicon!) or can they use the Rekenrek (bead string) to show you number bonds (pairs) to 20?
The children are really good at counting in multiples of 10 (10, 20, 30 etc) but it would be great if you could support them with counting in 5s at home. Here is a great video you can watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EemjeA2Djjw&safe=active or you could splat the multiples of 5 using a 100 square https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares Can they spot a pattern?
Drumming Workshop
We were really lucky this week as the children got to enjoy a drumming workshop! They got to explore different drums from around the world and listened to different beats and rhythms.
Big Talk
Have a look at the picture below and then have a go at discussing the questions...
Where is the cow going or where has it been?
What does a cow pack in a suitcase?
What do you think the bus will be like when it arrives?
If you were the cow, how would you be feeling?
Maybe the cow is on it's way after being adopted! Which animal would you adopt and why?
