Year 2 9th November 2020
Week 2- Fireworks and measuring in cm
English
This week we have been recapping on nouns and adjectives and also learning about onomatopoeia words.
Onomatopoeia is a word which sounds like what it means.
'Thud', 'crash', 'bang' and 'buzz' are all examples. Here is a video you can watch... https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/z8t3g82
We watched lots of videos and listened to audio clips and thought about nouns, adjectives and onomatopoeia words relating to fireworks and bonfire night. We will be using these to create our very own Firework Poems!
Maths
This week in maths we have been thinking about measuring using centimetres (cm). We have learnt how to hold the ruler, to measure things on a flat surface, to line the object up with the ruler, to start at zero.
If you have a ruler at home you could go on a measuring hunt. Can you find things longer than 15cm? Can you find something shorter than 10cm?
Here is a great online resource you can use at home...https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/measuring-in-cm
Handwriting
This week in Mrs Ellis's class we learnt how to join ar, or and re. Below are some pictures to show how these letters joins. At the bottom of the blog I have attached some handwriting to support our weekly phonics. This week we learnt about /s/ sound spelt with a c before the letters e, i and c. This can be known as a 'soft c'. For example ice, space, spicy, fancy, ace. We have also been thinking about the /j/ sound spelt with a g sometimes before e, i and y. This can be known as a 'soft g'. Some examples are giraffe, giant, energy, gem.
Pants
This week we have revisited the NSPCC Pants lesson discussing the pants rule, naming body parts, discussing good and bad touch and identifying people who we can trust. Here is a link to the video if you want to watch it at home...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lL07JOGU5o
Big Talk
Here are this weeks picture and questions to talk about...
Where is the figure sitting?
Why have they gone there?
What do you think might have happened?
What time of day do you think it is?
What would you say to them if you were sat next to them on the bench?
What do you think the light is in the distance?
Can you make a list of feelings/emotions to describe how the figure might be feeling?
Things to remember...
PE is back to normal and Mrs Ellis's class is on a Monday and Mrs Prophet's class is on a Tuesday.
Please remember to send in some spare clothes- especially extra socks and tights! We will be outside as much as the weather allows us.
Children in Need is this Friday 13th November and children are invited to wear non-uniform (spots, fancy dress or whatever they fancy) in return for a £1 donation.
