Year 2 December 7th 2020
Reading assessments, addition and subtraction
English
This week in English the children have worked really hard at some reading assessments. We are really impressed with their efforts and the progress they have made since starting back at school.
We have also had a go at writing our own Christmas stories and continued with handwriting.
Maths
In maths this week we have been using tens and ones to help us with addition and subtraction. Some of used practical resources and others have begun to draw tens and ones. Here is an example...
We have started with adding and subtracting single digit numbers e.g.
6 + 3 =
8 - 2 =
Then we move onto adding and subtracting a 1 digit number from a 2 digit number e.g.
25 + 4 =
39 - 7 =
Next it's adding and subtracting a 10s numbers from a 2 digit number e.g.
36 + 10 =
54 - 30 =
Then we move on to adding and subtracting two 2 digit numbers e.g.
35 + 21=
67 - 31 =
Maths Challenge
1. Mrs Ellis buys 30 presents this year. Dougie buys 17 presents. How many have they bought altogether?
2. Mrs Ellis receives 18 presents but Alfie the dog chews 5 of them. How many are left?
3. Mrs Prophet eats 23 chocolates from the tub. Mrs Wade eats 15. How many have they eaten altogether?
Don't forget the share your answers with your teacher for a team point and draw a tens and ones frame to help work out and prove the answer.
Big Talk
This week we would like you to have a think and talk about...
If you could have one wish for this Christmas, what would it be?
Will you choose something that you will benefit from, or will it be something that helps someone else?
It might even be a wish that helps many people.
What makes Christmas special for you?
How has the way people celebrate Christmas changed over the years?
Things to remember...
This Friday 11th December is Christmas jumper day
The last day to bring in Christmas cards is Monday 14th
Next Wednesday 16th is Christmas lunch
