Photography GCSE Takes Off Thanks To PTA Funding

With a successful A-Level photography course running at the school’s Sixth Form, teacher Ro Mason identified a gap in learning at GCSE level and introduced the new course. Ro said: “I recognised that there was an opportunity to introduce a course which is relevant to students in the modern world and provides transferable skills relevant to future careers".

“The careers supported by photography are wide-ranging due to the skills involved. It’s not just about taking pictures but also knowing how to work to a brief, being IT literate, using interpersonal skills, and seeing a project through from start to finish”.

However, in order to get the course up and running, Ro turned to the school’s Parent and Teacher Association for help. After a successful bid, the PTA provided the money to buy the cameras and equipment needed.

Ro said: “The PTA have been incredibly supportive. We are so lucky to have this team of volunteers who raise funds for our school, as well as a wonderful community who support their fundraising. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved”.

Now, three months into the new course, Ro says it’s having a significant impact: “The students have been phenomenal. They are completely engaged in their learning and are really motivated to come into school. It is wonderful to see how much they are enjoying the subject”.

There will be an exhibition at the end of the school year for the students to showcase their work.
