Young Carers in School.

Here at Kinsale Junior School we understand that there are many children who may have needs and we are dedicated to meeting those needs.  One of the ways we can support children is through recognising and supporting our young carers.

We are aware that some of our pupils are young carers.  A young carer is a child under 18 who is caring for a parent, sibling, someone who is frail or a family member who may have a long-term illness or disability, mental health problems, learning disability or has challenges regarding misuse of alcohol or drugs. They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Research suggests there are at least 700,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers are skilled in many ways because of their caring experiences, however many of the responsibilities they are undertaking may result in the young person experiencing physical and emotional tiredness, and they may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At Kinsale Junior School we are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively.

Kinsale is very lucky to have 5 trained ‘Young Carers in School’ champions Mrs Brock who is situated in Year 3, Mrs Taylor who is situated in Year 4, Mrs Carpenter who is situated in Year 5, Mrs Jones who is situated in Year 6 and Mrs Amos in the Acorn Room.

If you think your child might be a young carer, or could be affected by any of the issues we’ve mentioned above, please let us know by contacting the school office and we will provide you with a form to complete and further information to read.   If you do not feel comfortable and confident in doing this, or have any further questions, please contact the office on 01603 425662 to arrange an appointment with one of our ‘Young Carers in School’ champions.

Any information that is given to us will be treated sensitively and no information will be shared without your knowledge.
