Alderman Peel

High School

About Us

Our students work hard, are proud of their uniform, and show respect and courtesy for others. To support these high standards, we nurture our students in an inclusive and progressive environment to feel safe and secure in their learning. We offer wide-ranging sports, arts, languages, and cultural enrichment programmes. Our offer includes careers and Student Leadership programmes, preparing the students for the opportunities of life beyond school. Our staff go above and beyond in providing the best possible pastoral care, guidance, and support for all our students. The continuing success of Alderman Peel High School is based on strong partnerships, most significantly in our shared values with our parents and the wider community. Together, we ensure the highest standards of achievement and personal development. We look forward to welcoming your child and will do everything we can to ensure they are happy, thriving and reaching their potential.

Our Values

We are one of very few schools that is named after someone who lived in our Community. Sam Peel was a highly successful Alderman (Councillor), who was known for the work he did for the community and education across the county. Sam (pictured below) was instrumental in our school being built. The opening of the school, in 1963, was his last public appearance.

Our values were created by our School Parliament, in consultation with staff and our governors. They represent what we consider valuable and unique about Alderman Peel High School...

  • AMBITION - Because we should always strive to improve
  • PRIDE - in our community and ourselves
  • HAPPINESS - Stressing the importance of physical and mental wellbeing
  • SUCCESS - Because hard work pays off and success can be success as a team

Promoting British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and inclusion of those with different faiths and beliefs"
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister. These values are reinforced at our school regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

Our school parliament is an excellent representation of democracy at a school level. Students are elected to represent the student body and have specialist areas to focus on, mirroring the UK parliamentary system. Parliamentary leaders meet with members of the LT to discuss improvements and how staff, students and the community can work together.

The Rule of Law

Everybody is subject to laws and rules. APHS is no different. What is essential for students is that they understand why there are laws and rules. Linking with respect and inclusion rules provide the basic expectations everyone should meet. Our "BASICS" (Be on time, Appearance, Stationery and equipment, Instructions - first time every time, Come prepared to learn and School Values) demonstrate this at school level.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety (safer Internet Day in 2015), assemblies and Collapsed Learning Days. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of curriculum in Year 9, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Also, through the curriculum students learn to understand the importance of liberty e.g. in History about Civil Rights, Slavery and the Suffragette Movement. Also, in RS students learn about religious freedoms in the UK.  In Business Studies students learn about their rights and responsibilities under laws such as Health & Safety, Freedom of Information, Copyright and Consumer Protection Act.

Mutual Respect

APHS students respect each others views and the views of others. This is achieved through education. Assemblies, Citizenship Days, learning through subjects and extracurricular activities and trips all contribute to an understanding and respect of others.

Inclusion of those of different faiths and beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies, Citizenship Days and our curriculum is designed to develop inclusion and understanding of those with different cultures, beliefs and faiths. We pride ourselves on our highly inclusive ethos.

Our Trust

Alderman Peel High School officially became part of The Wensum Trust on 1 November 2017.

As part of The Wensum Trust, our school benefits from a wealth of opportunities to help achieve the Trust-wide ethos of developing happy and engaged children at all stages of the educational journey.

The Wensum Trust has schools situated within three geographical hubs across Norfolk, providing seamless transitions from early years through to sixteen plus. The City hub has schools in and around Norwich, the Rural hub includes schools in and around Acle and the Coastal hub comprises schools on the North Norfolk coast.

All three hubs work closely together to provide a rich and diverse range of experiences for children within all Trust schools. Community partnerships, often unique to The Wensum Trust, are developed locally with organisations such as the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, North Walsham Rugby Club and Wells Sea Cadets, and made accessible across all three hubs. This creates an educational approach which is far broader and deeper than just the academic national curriculum and builds opportunities for all children to discover where they excel and to develop into confident, healthy and fulfilled members of society.
