Squirrels
Welcome to Squirrels Class!
Your class teachers are Mrs Houston (Monday-Tuesday) and Mrs Paterson (Wednesday-Friday). Your other class staff are Mrs Bennett, Miss Ladbrooke and Miss Olley.
Our Summer term topics are ‘Journeys’ and ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’
As we begin our Journeys topic we will be learning about different types of vehicles and sharing our personal experiences of going on a journey. We will invent and create our own junk-modelled vehicles. We will look at different types of journeys in our local environment and create maps of our journeys. We will also learn about the journey of a letter and write letters home to our families.
We will begin the second half of the summer term with our 'International Week' where we will take a journey to India! We will find out about the similarities and differences between England and India, including schools, homes, weather, food, traditions and music, as well as exploring famous landmarks in India.
We will then look at the history of different types of vehicles, comparing vehicles of the past to vehicles now, including learning about the Wright brothers and their early designs of planes. We will become scientists and discuss what makes different vehicles move, including hot air balloons, where we will experiment with making our own!
Towards the end of the term, we will have an Art / Eco-focus week when we will learn all about looking after the world around us, including the ocean and animals in the ocean. We will create artwork and use ‘Wise about Words’ to showcase our work to the rest of the school!
For the last part of the summer term we will complete our transition topic ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’. During this time, we will get to know our new class teachers, talk about things to look forward to in Year 1 and reflect on things we have enjoyed in Reception. We will be cooking some treats ready to have our own Teddy Bears Picnic!
In our PE lessons for Summer 1 we will focus on ball skills in Real PE, where we will explore skills such as rolling, throwing and catching different-sized balls. We will practise sending and receiving balls with accuracy. In Summer 2 we will focus on sports day skills and outdoor games such as practising javelin and different types of races.
You will receive a topic web, which will show you in more detail the learning your child will be covering. Please check Tapestry regularly to see what your child has been up to in class. We would love to see photos, comments and entries from you too, to share what you have been up to at home. We look forward to the Summer term and sharing our learning with you. If you have any questions, queries or worries, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our staff team either in person at the door, through Tapestry or via a phone call or email to the school office.

COOKING
Our cooking day will usually be on a Monday, however we often cook in class and enjoy trying our food together on the carpet. If we have food to send home, we will notify you by email beforehand, so you can send in a container if you would like to.
PE
Our Reception PE days will be Tuesday and Thursday. We ask that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days. Please could earrings be removed, and longer hair tied back on PE days. PE kit should include black shorts, a white t-shirt, plimsolls and black tracksuit bottoms or leggings.
Please also ensure that your child has spare clothing in their bags in case of any toilet accidents. These should be kept in school on your child’s coat peg.
Homework
Please read or share a book with your child at least three times a week and note this in their Reading Record.
Please support your child to complete the activities on Reading Eggs on a weekly basis.
Occasionally we may set simple topic-related challenges based on the children’s learning in class. If so we will share these challenges with you via letter and on Tapestry.
