Squirrels
Welcome to Squirrels Class!
Your class teachers are Miss Barley (Monday-Friday), Mrs Houston (Monday-Tuesday) and Mrs Paterson (Wednesday-Friday). Your other class staff are Miss Ladbrooke and Miss Olley.
Our Spring term topic is ‘To Infinity and Beyond!'
In the first week of the Spring term we will be taking part in Events Week, where we will explore different subjects and complete exciting tasks. We will be creating some fantastic artwork to be displayed in the corridors of our wonderful school.
As we begin our Space topic we will be learning about famous astronauts who have been into space as well as the important people who worked for NASA and helped them get there. We will learn about different planets within our solar-system and learn all about rockets and how they move. We will become scientists and experiment with how to make rocket fuel! We will finish the half-term by thinking about how we can get to space and what planets are in our solar-system.
Our 'International Week' this term will focus on learning about Ghana. We will find out about the similarities and differences between Ghana and the UK, including schools, homes, weather, food, traditions and music, as well as exploring the famous landmarks of Ghana.
Following the half term break, we will continue our ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ topic where we will;
- Learn about Spring and how plants grow. We will experiment with planting seeds in soil and in stones to see which will grow and observe the world around us and discuss how to look after living things.
- Explore the moon sculpture by Luke Jerram and have a go at creating our own. We will use air-dry clay to create our own moon sculptures. We will explore the moon and discuss similarities and differences between the moon and other planets.
- Explore the text ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and design and create our own aliens to live on the moon. We will think about what things our aliens might need to help them survive up in space, and design and make our own toy to be sent into space, complete with a parachute for a smooth landing!
Towards the end of term we will take part in Easter activities and crafts, learning about different religions and their celebrations at Easter time as well as celebrations that are special to us. We will visit a local Church for the Easter story and some crafts.
You will receive a topic web, which will show you in more detail the learning your child will be covering. Please check Tapestry regularly to see what your child has been up to in class and leave a comment if you would like to. We would love to see photos, comments and entries from you too, to share what you have been up to at home. We look forward to the term ahead and sharing our learning with you! If you have any questions, queries or worries, please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our staff team either in person at the door, through Tapestry or via a phone call or email to the school office.

COOKING
Our cooking day will usually be on a Monday, however we often cook in class and enjoy trying our food together on the carpet. If we have food to send home, we will notify you by email beforehand, so you can send in a container if you would like to.
PE
Our Reception PE days will be Tuesday and Thursday. We ask that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days. Please could earrings be removed, and longer hair tied back on PE days. PE kit should include black shorts, a white t-shirt, plimsolls and black tracksuit bottoms or leggings. During the Spring term, we will be thinking about rhythm and movement through dance.
Please also ensure that your child has spare clothing in their bags in case of any toilet accidents. These should be kept in school on your child’s coat peg.
Homework
Please read or share a book with your child at least three times a week and note this in their Reading Record.
Please support your child to complete the activities on Reading Eggs on a weekly basis.
Occasionally we may set simple topic-related challenges based on the children’s learning in class. If so we will share these challenges with you via letter and on Tapestry.
