Level 3 BTEC National Qualifications in Business
Business Vision Statement
To provide the key knowledge of what businesses are, how they are set up and run, how they grow, how they interact and compete and reasons why businesses succeed or fail.
This knowledge will then provide the basis for our students (the next wave of entrepreneurs and employees) to set up their own businesses and not only understand a business’ place in the business world (as a competitor and driving force of the economy), but their own place within the business world (as an employee, customer, voter, and member of the community).

BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business (equivalent to 1 A Level)
Units - details and forms of assessment
Unit 1 – Exploring business: This unit includes internally-marked assignments that look at a wide range of business structures and how they are affected by the external environment. Topics such enterprise skills, innovation, legal issues, the economy and stakeholder groups are covered
Unit 2 – Developing a marketing campaign: This unit contains an externally-marked controlled assessment based on research that students will collect on a selected business from a pre-released market/industry. Students will gain an understanding of marketing and how a marketing campaign is developed. Topics include market research, the marketing mix, marketing budgets and timescales for marketing activities.
Unit 3 – Personal and business finance: This unit has an externally-marked exam. The personal finance element of this unit looks at the understanding of why money is important and how managing your money can help prevent future financial difficulties. The business finance aspects of the unit introduce you to accounting terminology, the purpose and importance of business accounts and the different sources of finance available to businesses.
Unit 8 – Recruitment and selection process: This unit includes internally-marked assignments that involve the preparation of recruitment and selection documentation. This process culminates in job interviews that students can evaluate. Ethical and legal issues are also investigated within the recruitment process.

Unit 6 – Principles of management: This unit contains an externally marked controlled assessment that is based on the functions and styles of management and leadership, culture, human resource issues and the impact of change within businesses.
Unit 8 – Recruitment and selection process: This unit includes internally-marked assignments that involve the preparation of recruitment and selection documentation. This process culminates in job interviews that students can evaluate. Ethical and legal issues are also investigated within the recruitment process.
What makes a successful BTEC Business student?
BTEC Business students should have a keen interest in the business world and an enquiring mind. Students also need to be self-motivated and organised in order to keep on top of assessment deadlines.
What opportunities are there for me to study beyond the classroom?
Wherever possible, students are encouraged to develop links with businesses in the local area. Recent visits have included Banham Zoo and The English Whisky Company which allowed students to complete the research phase of their assignments.
Progression
BTEC Business students have moved on to a number of destinations including, accounting, retail management, higher level business courses at college and university and apprenticeships.
To study this course, what qualifications will I need and in which subjects?
BTEC Business students do NOT need to have studied GCSE Business Studies or any other previous Business course. However, if a student did study Business at GCSE, a grade of 4 or higher will be required to take BTEC Business at level 3. Students will need to produce quite lengthy projects which will require a good level of written English. The unit 3 finance exam also requires quantitative skills. As such, a grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths is required.
