Give Your Books A New Home

Hellesdon High School is reaching out to the local community to help them fill the book shelves of their library.

The school library has become a key hub for students; offering homework club, lunchtime activities and a calm zone.

The library is currently home to 16,000 books, but according to the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, every school library should have 13 books per pupil. This means Hellesdon High’s library is 4,000 short of what they need.

They are now appealing to parents and the wider school community to donate pre-loved books which are suitable for teenagers and young adults.

Sartita Ould-Zaouche, who manages the school library, said: “We have a very high turn-over of books, and over time they become damaged or lost. We would love to reach our target and have 4,000 books donated – finances are tight for schools at the moment and they can be difficult to replace, so we have been very grateful to receive donations in the past.”

Every person who donates books to the school is acknowledged with a special message inside each one.

Sarita added: “Any books which are donated go a long way to support our students – not just with their education, but also their mental health and wellbeing. We promote reading for pleasure across the school as it has been proven to be linked to better grades, increased happiness and being compassionate.

“Our school library is very popular and in any one day we can have up to 180 students visit. We want to build on its success as an inclusive and social space. We would be incredibly grateful to receive any books taking up space on your shelves; and by donating your books, you will be contributing to the education and wellbeing of the children in your local community.”

If you would like to donate any fiction or non-fiction books appropriate for teenagers and young adults, please drop them off at the Hellesdon High School reception.
