European Day of Languages 2023

Read more about how we celebrated the day on Tuesday 26 September.

On Tuesday 26 September, we marked the European Day of Languages. This is a day to celebrate the amazing number and variety of languages spoken across Europe. Schools like ours, mark the event with a day to promote language learning and to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.

On the day, each class focussed on a different country. They learnt about the country, their traditions, songs, games and of course learnt some words and phrases in their particular language.

We were grateful to Norse who provided a special European lunch with a menu inspired by food from other countries.

We were so thankful that some parents were able to join us to share their language and culture. We had parents sharing Spanish, French, German, Tamil, Hindi and Ukrainian with some of the classes. They shared books, games, songs and more with the children.

Some of our staff were able to share their own languages too. Mrs Lutchmeah talked to the children about speaking French, growing up in Mauritius.

We also invited children in our classes to share some of their languages with their peers. Here, one of our Year 4 pupils is teaching his peers a song in French.

It was a fantastic day to celebrate the cultural diversity of our school, the wider community and beyond.
